Barber County United was awarded and administers a 2023 Child Care Capacity Accelerator grant from the State of Kansas Childrens Cabinet & Trust Fund, thus forming the Tri-County Childcare Coalition (TCCC). The Accelerator program was designed to advance the rapid development of additional childcare slots statewide.

BCU’s award specifically funds the TCCC region with capacity-expansion construction projects at childcare facilities in Medicine Lodge and Kiowa in Barber County, Anthony and Attica in Harper County, and Greensburg in Kiowa County.

Additionally, TCCC is honored to be one of only sixteen Accelerator organizations accepted as an Innovation Communities Cohort. BCU with TCCC leaders will collaborate to assist the state to identify and scale effective and transformative statewide approaches to childcare.

TCCC leaders have dedicated a portion of the Innovation Communities funds to develop a TCCC MENTOR OUTREACH program. Offering guidance and support for specific childcare issues of focus to the licensed providers in the TCCC region that are not part of the Accelerator grant award.

Medicine Lodge Daycare, INC is a city-owned facility located at 126 N. Main Street in the heart of downtown Medicine Lodge.
Opened in August 2024, this innovative model houses five independently licensed family childcare homes under one roof. The project created 60 new childcare slots for North Barber County and empowered five local entrepreneurs to launch their own businesses.
It was designed in response to the community's urgent childcare needs and supported through partnerships with the city and state agencies.

More than just a daycare, the facility is breathing new life into Main Street by bringing young families and children into the downtown corridor daily. It’s a true example of rural innovation and collaboration in action.
